October 27: Naaman's Maid

"And the Syrians had gone out on raids, and had brought back captive a young girl from the land of Israel. She waited on Naaman’s wife. Then she said to her mistress, “If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy.”"

2 Kings 5:2-3

In this story, a nameless servant girl, in the house of a prominent political figure, suggested to Naaman’s wife that her boss go see the prophet Elisha to receive healing. This was an extremely bold statement. Slaves never offered suggestions to the ruler of the house, let alone the high commander of an army! It must have been intimidating to speak up and give a solution to a problem when everyone else had given up hope. It reveals that she cared more about her boss’s well being than proper protocol.

This Israeli slave in the house of Naaman overcame intimidation. She chose to offer a solution that would help her heathen master, even if all the pressure around her said to keep quiet. Because she dared to speak up, her master was set free from his years of suffering.

You can beat the odds, too.

When truth will set someone free, go to them in love and show them the way. It may appear that you should keep quiet and not trouble the waters, but if you speak up, lives may be changed for eternity.

“Don’t be labeled by life."
