The verb "to stir up" in this passage is the only time it is used in the New Testament. The meaning of this verb refers to keeping a fire stoked, or at full flame. Paul is relating Timothy's gift to that of a fire, which can dwindle or even die out due to neglect. Instead, Timothy had to move forward in his gift, operating in the spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. |
