Isaiah affords the readers that the blacksmith "bloweth the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy." Isaiah is demonstrating a method of "die and mold," constructing a weapon of war. Based upon the time of this writing, it could not refer to the metal point of a javelin, hurled at David by Saul (1 Samuel 18:11); the much-feared double-edged blade called a sword or dagger (Judges 3:16), or the iron-spiked, studded, mace cleaver, or to the metal blades of the hand of infantry weapon called an axe (Ezekiel 26:9). The emphasis is on the careful and artistic wielding procedure that would produce a hand-to-hand fighting weapon. Isaiah warns us that not only do we have an enemy - he intends on attacking them with tyranny to produce havoc in their city and kill them! |
